Need some help here. Tenant moved out of rental unit but left behind an apartment smelling of cat urine. Have tried a mixture of listerine and vinegar but didn,t help. Trying to avoid a costly way so if theres another way before the costly way please help. Thanks in advance.

I agree with Urbantigers 79. Mix a solution of 10% biological (enzymatic) washing powder with warm water for cleaning, rinse thoroughly with cold water, blot dry, then spray with surgical spirit and work this in with a nail brush.

Another suggestion is one tablespoon of Napisan and one tablespoon of biological washing powder to one pint of water. Test this method on a hidden area first, as it may not be colourfast on more delicate carpet or fabric.

There is no other way but the costly way. Cat urine can be covered up for a little while, but the urine itself will always be there and the smell will remain.

Depends on how long and how much urine there was.

If it was on carpet, its best to remove the carpet. If the stains aren't too bad, you can use vinegar water, and/or baking soda with water to help remove the stains/smell. I use this on small accident spots around my apartment. Even Windex will remove some, but it can bleach the carpet.

You could also contact a cleaning company, but I am sure theyw ill want to charge a large sum for it.

Make a solution of biological washing powder and soak the area thoroughly with that (it needs to be biological as it's the enzymes that break down the proteins in the urine). Then rinse and blot it. When the area is dry spray it with surgical spirit (or any spirit if you can bring yourself to do so!) to break down any remaining fat deposits or smell.

If you're not sure where the smell is coming from though, that will be hard to do. If you have carpets, take them up and get them cleaned professionally. You may also have to clean the floorboards underneath the carpet with a solution esp for the job (I don't know any brand names but I did see a programme on tv where someone had a similar problem and they did in the end have to use something quite strong and specially designed for the job)
